This 17th-century Chinese porcelain dish is a fine example of kosometsuke, a category of blue-and-white porcelain made specifically for the Japanese market during the late Ming dynasty.
The central motif features a flower arrangement, painted in beautiful underglaze cobalt blue. The design includes stylized blossoms—possibly irises, lotuses, or chrysanthemums—executed in an expressive, freehand brush style that evokes the fluidity of ink painting. The floral composition has a spontaneous, almost calligraphic quality, in harmony with Japanese aesthetic ideals.
Framing the central bouquet are decorations in the wall, including folded fans and abstract motifs. These elements, spaced around the interior rim, provide visual rhythm and reflect the Japanese taste for asymmetrical balance and poetic symbolism.
The base has a single character mark, translated as: 雅 (yǎ), which translates to “elegant”, “graceful”, or “refined”.
