Condition Report: 1 bumspot with hairline to the rim. Especially the lower part of the body with crackle lines. Size: 19.5CM High
The bottle is freely painted in underglaze blue with a continuous garden and waterside scene featuring rabbits and carp among flowering plants, aquatic vegetation and stylised rockwork. The rabbits are shown moving through the foliage, while the carp swim among water plants around the lower part of the body. The long neck is decorated with smaller birds, flowers and leafy branches.
In Chinese art, the rabbit is traditionally associated with the moon, longevity and immortality. The carp symbolises perseverance, abundance and success, particularly through its association with the legend of the carp passing the Dragon Gate and transforming into a dragon. Together, these animals create an auspicious scene expressing wishes for longevity, prosperity and advancement.
The lively, spontaneous brushwork and loosely arranged composition are characteristic of late Ming Zhangzhou, traditionally known as Swatow, export porcelain.
