Condition Report: Age-related rim fritting, commonly known as “mushikui” or “moth-eaten” edges, and 1 hairline. Size: 35x6CM DiameterxHeight

Very happy to share this lovely early 17th century dish, Jingdezhen made for the Japanese market.

This large and impressive Chinese blue-and-white porcelain dish was made during the late Ming dynasty for the Japanese market, circa 1620–1640.

The dish is finely painted in underglaze blue with two birds in a landscape filled with flowering plants, rocks and a twisting tree. Stylised clouds  are visible in the sky above. The broad moulded rim is densely decorated with alternating panels of chrysanthemums and other flowers against overlapping wave motifs.

The reverse is decorated with sacred mushrooms and bears an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark within a double circle.

Diameter: approximately 35 cm.

Condition: Age-related rim fritting, commonly known as “mushikui” or “moth-eaten” edges, and 1 hairline.

Similar dishes are pictured in the literature, also in the Butler collection and Peony Pavillion for example.
