Nice Chinese Kraak Porcelain Plate – Wanli Period (1573–1620), Ming Dynasty
A beautifully potted and finely painted Chinese Kraak porcelain dish, dating to the period of the late Ming Dynasty.
With strong cobalt blue color.
The central medallion is painted with a large flowering peony growing beside a pierced scholar’s rock, surrounded by leafy branches and several small insects or butterflies. The peony traditionally symbolises wealth, honour and high social standing.
The reverse bears a six-character underglaze-blue mark within double circles. This is highly unusual on these kind of pieces:
大明成化年製 — Dà Míng Chénghuà nián zhì
“Made during the Chenghua reign of the Great Ming dynasty.”
