An attractive 16th-century Chinese blue-and-white porcelain plate dating to the Jiajing period of the Ming dynasty.
The central double-ringed medallion is freely painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a highly stylised Shou (壽) character, representing longevity. It is surrounded by branches with fruits, creating an auspicious composition associated with long life, prosperity and renewal. The broad surrounding area is undecorated, giving the central design a particularly bold appearance.
The reverse is left plain and bears a small square seal-type mark which is almost black due to firing probably.
The square seal mark most likely reads:
富貴佳器 — Fùguì jiāqì
Meaning:
“A fine vessel for the wealthy and honourable”
or more naturally, “A fine vessel of wealth and honour.”
