Up for auction this week is a beautiful Japanese Arita porcelain plate dating to the first half of the 17th century, early Edo period.

Painted in underglaze cobalt blue, the decoration features three stylised phoenixes with long, flowing tail feathers surrounding a central 寿 (ju) character, representing longevity. Double blue lines frame the central medallion, while scattered cloud motifs complete the design. The reverse is simply decorated with blue line borders and has an unmarked glazed base within an unglazed foot ring.

Literature / comparable example
See China as the Inspiration for Japanese Porcelain, p. 89, no. 237, for a closely comparable Arita dish with a central longevity (ju) character and phoenix decoration, dated to the first half of the 17th century. The illustrated example is held in the Shibata Collection at the Kyushu Ceramic Museum, accession no. 00912.
