A very unusual bowl from the edo period.

易経、詩経、礼記、(詩経)and 春秋 are the Five Books of Commentaries that were made by Confucius followers.
One can not but feel the great humour of the artist.

Up to the Meiji Restoration reading Chinese texts and writing Chinese, especially Chinese poems was a must for intellectual elites. In the Tang Dynasty Abe no Nakamaro, for example, worked as Chinese office or as diplomat in Vietnam and he died in China. This meant he had passed the national exam to be a bureaucrat. Certainly he must have mastered these teachings as well as the other four books.

All will be packed neat and sent track and trace airmail with insurance. Packages are always shipped on the next wednesday. If there is a specific hurry please contact us.
