Sharing with you this interesting small dish dating to the late Jiajing or possibly early Wanli period. Decorated with Deer, Monkey, Bird and Bees in a landscape with a Peach tree. The reverse of the dish is decorated with a Karakusa arabesque, and an interesting mark partly covered by a firing flaw. The pattern can be read in several ways;
– as a reference to the tale of the Monkey King and the Peaches of Immortality
– as a rebus design “julu feng hou”, meaning “May you receive high rank and emolument” deriving from the combination of Deer, (lu), Bird (ju), Bees (feng) the curious blobs above the head of the Monkey (hou)
– or as simply a collection of auspicious motifs of longevity and good fortune, as reflected by the Peach and Precious objects that surround the central motif.
