Arhats, also known as rakan in Japanese, are Buddhist saints who have achieved enlightenment but have chosen to remain on earth to help others attain it as well. They are often depicted in Japanese porcelain, particularly in the Kutani style, as they are an important part of Buddhist iconography. In Kutani porcelain, arhats are often depicted alongside other mythical creatures in lush garden scenes, as is the case with this large Japanese Kutani charger plate. The five arhats on this plate are likely meant to represent the Five Hundred Arhats, a group of enlightened beings in Buddhist mythology who have transcended the cycle of birth and death.
