Building a reference collection

In 2013 we started collecting Chinese porcelain. When building a collection one can do this from different perspectives. Often collectors focus on a certain period (for example Kangxi porcelain) or on a certain style (for example Famille Verte). In general there are 4 things collectors tend to focus on. In no particular order:

    1. -Quality of the artwork (painting, pottery)

    2. -Condition (In china there is an extreme focus on this point)

    3. -Rarity

    4. -Historical significance (we tend to focus on this point, being historians)

In our collecting we focus on rarity & historical significance and we have a broader plan to collect a huge amount of pieces to be able to show how incredibly diverse the decoration on porcelain is, we mostly do plates because they have to most diverse decoration . We do not care so much about the condition of the porcelain because we are talking about item often more than 300 years old. We ourselves do not understand why an item has to be in perfect condition. The quality of the artwork is of course an extra appealing factor.

Here if you follow this link it will take you to the reference collection. We have put it in a facebook album. All items are pictured from the back and front. Please feel free to browse these items, leave your comments on age etc, Or simply use these pieces to build up more knowledge. You are free to share the pictures or use them for whatever. We want this to be a sharing project which can be used by everyone. We will keep uploading pictures in the facebook album as time progresses. If you want to follow this simply click the link
