Qianlong, 18th century, circa 1785. Famille Rose
Family enamels decoration, of a murder scene with two men in a landscape, in a gold oval reserve, the rim with purple ribbon and garland of intertwined flowers and a gold net, small chip with small crack in the saucer, wears.
This decoration represents the assassination of Sir George Brander by his Nephew. After returning from the east he sent his nephew Thomas who behaved disastrously and returned to England in 1782. There he was compromised in a gambling debt affair and as his uncle and benefactor refused to help him he stabbed him in an argument. This affair had a very big impact in the UK .
For a bowl with this decoration and perhaps of the same service, illustrated and qualified “Rs” (extremely rare), see by F. and N. Hervouët and Y. Bruneau, La Porcelaine des
Compagnies des Indes à décor occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 204.
