A small square blue and white bowl with overglaze enamels. Two sides feature dragon designs of different compositions, and a Chinese poem is inscribed on the opposite side. These Chinese poems are considered to be among the Zen phrases that were popular in Japan, and the group of dragons is thought to be based on a line from one of them, “Sansen (class) Nami Takaka Gyoryu,” in which “a carp transforms into a dragon.” Inside also with a dragon and flowers.
Base with a 6 character mark.
Arita, Hizen, 1680 – 1700s
