A beautiful and unusual antique Japanese porcelain kendi (ghendi), dating to the Edo period, 17th century. The vessel is finely decorated in the early Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron-red enamels. The rounded body features large flowering plants, scrolling foliage and stylized garden fences, creating an attractive and lively composition.

The distinctive shape consists of a globular body, a tall cylindrical neck with a flared rim, and a small bulbous side spout decorated with delicate floral sprays. Kendi were originally designed as pouring vessels, allowing liquids to be dispensed through the side spout without drinking directly from the main opening. The form originated in Southeast Asia and became popular throughout the Asian trading world, including Japan.

A charming example of early Japanese Arita export porcelain, combining an unusual traditional form with colourful floral decoration.
