Condition Report:
Sharing with you this lovely large dish (….cm) from the Wanli period. What you see is a classic blue-and-white landscape scene: a scholar meeting a woodcutter, surrounded by mountains and mist. A quiet moment of travel, transition, and contemplation—capturing the spirit of the scholar’s journey.
The woodcutter (樵夫, qiaofu) is one of the most important figures in Chinese landscape painting and late Ming porcelain.
To modern eyes he looks like a peasant carrying an axe, but symbolically he is much more.
He lives:
- in the mountains
- away from court
- away from corruption
- close to nature
He often represents. the person who has chosen wisdom over ambition.
This is why scholars are constantly shown talking to woodcutters.
