Condition Report: rimfritting and 1 hairline from rim. Size: 17.2x3.7CM DiameterxHeight
Sharing with you this fantastic Chinese porcelain dish. Period Tianqi, Ming dynasty.
This piece belongs to the Kosometsuke (Ko-sometsuke) group, produced in Jingdezhen specifically for the Japanese tea ceremony market.
The dish is finely potted with a gently everted rim and decorated in underglaze cobalt blue.
The visual image—likely the Penglai Island, the Daoist Paradise.
Japanese viewers recognized the Chinese literati visual vocabulary of Daoism and
Penglai is the legendary Isle of the Immortals in Daoist cosmology.
Classical sources describe it as:
-
a mountain-island rising from the Eastern Sea
-
unreachable by ordinary humans
-
home of immortals (xian)
-
the place where the elixir of life is found
If Penglai is referenced, the image is saying:
“This scene exists outside dynastic time, politics, and human decay.”
Key ideas:
-
transcendence of mortality
-
escape from historical cycles
-
permanence beyond rise and fall
