Here we have an exceptional Kraak dish of a type that is very rarely encountered. The unusual border is decorated in a distinctly Chinese taste, with scholars or literati in a landscape among pine, willow and flowering trees.
In the centre is a seated Buddhist luohan (arhat) in a landscape, creating a highly unusual combination of Buddhist and literati imagery. This is certainly not the standard type of decoration normally associated with Kraak porcelain.
A closely related dish with a similarly unusual border and figural decoration is illustrated in Arita Episode 2: China as an Inspiration for Japanese Porcelain, published by Saga Prefecture and The Kyushu Ceramic Museum.
