THOMAS
Qianlong c.1755
in any ordinary, the arms and motto are exactly as
AIthough not recorded those ‘Thos. ona Thomas Junr. The A flowering plant proper, arms are, Or and three motto bulls Periculo heads et cabossed labore which gules;
bookplate of this date in the Franks Collection (29236) engraved with the crest, The coat in these tinctures is only recorded as that or
is nowhere recorded. and is so identified where two services are illustrated in Volume
(1974) Styles 04 and P16.) On the rim below the coat 1s aBull

which is not clear but probably composed of numerous letters
It would seem that this service and those in Volume must have been made
and all are after the same original although the motto
for the same person, scroll varies in position Parts of all three services are today in the same
amily collection, although their exact identification was unknown until
recently.t was known, however, that the present owner had an ancestor callec
Thomas Thomas, born c.1710, and he is recorded in numerous trade
directories, first as a merchant (Thomas & Son’ in 1738, and Thomas &
Sons` by 1776), but in 1744 and 1755 as a director and Sub-Governor of the
London Assurance Company, and as a director of the South Sea Company
in 1745. In 1765 and 1776 Thomas Thomas was a director of the Bank of
ingland, having an address throughout that period in Cannon Stree
London.
Thomas Thomas’ daughter married John Travers (a merchant and broke
f Cornhill 1770-90, and a director of the East India Company) and theit
laughter, Charlotte, married Admiral Lucas Hardyman. It would seen
ertain that all three services were made for the Thomas Thomas who was
bom e.1710. t is ofinterest that there is a similar bookplate of the same design (29226
ngraved M. Thomas A.M.Christ.Coll.Cant.’ but this has a different mott
and is probably for the brother of Thomas Thomas Junior). The neares
similar armorial recorded in any armory has the bulls’ heads couped, and
different crest and motto, recorded for a Thomas R. Thomas, a Captain of
Marines on the South America Station, but it is not clear if he is closely
elated, nor his exact dates.. :ce offifty-five pieces
