Very nice ca 1740. Qianlong period plate. Arms of Skinner.
From David Sanctuary Howard
P17 SKINNER Qianlong c.1765 The arms are of Skinner, Sable a chevron or between three griffins ‘ heads erased argent. The crest (on the reverse of the teapot), A griffin’s head erased argent holding in the mouth a hand couped gules The armorial and decoration make it certain that this tea service was either areplacement or addition to the Skinner dinner and tea service made c,1728 (see Volume I, E1). Not only is the armorial in identical style, but the spearhead design also copies the earlier design, and almost certainly a piece of that service was sent out as a pattern. It is not certain for which of the descendants of Robert Skinner, Bishop of Bristol in the 17th Century, the earlier service was made – but probably for the son of his fourth son, Samuel Skinner, a London merchant who died in 1708 leaving four daughters (two of whom married William Proctor of Epsom, whose family had a service c.1730, and Christopher Hanbury, for whose family a number of services were made) and a son, Samuel, a prominent merchant in London, who may well have ordered the earlier service. His son, John, of the City of London, who died in 1750, left two sons – one of whom would have been the likely owner of this service. John. his heir, was of the City and Wanstead, Essex, who married in 1762 Mary, daughter of Captain Thomas Walker; while Russell Skinner of Newton House, Lymington, married Mary Page and died in 1785. It would have been likely that either could have ordered a new tea service at the time of their mariage. There are also two other services with these arms after a different original (Volume I, P17 and S 1). Mustration: Sotheby’s, 24th January, 1990.
