Performance of Sarugaku for Lord Higashiyama (Higashiyama dono Sarugaku kōgyō no zu)
Utagawa Sadahide
In 1465 the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436-1490) commissioned the palace retreat Higashiyamadono in the Eastern Hills of Kyoto. Sarugaku was the precursor to Noh, and in this idealised print we see many male characters from later plays appearing together on a formal Noh stage at the palace. The long calligraphic text states that this performance was presented to Yoshimasa’s favoured retainers to celebrate his wife’s pregnancy.
