DUTCH-DECORATED BOWL
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795), CA. 1736-1740
CHINESE PORCELAIN PAINTED IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE, AND OVERGLAZE ENAMELS
AND GILT APPLIED IN HOLLAND IN CA. 1740

A bowl modelled with rounded sides, a slightly
everted rim and a tapering foot ring. Decorated on the
outside in original underglaze blue a large peony bloom
and other flowers growing from a fence and a diaper
border below the inner rim. The outside is overpainted in
bright shades of yellow, green, iron-red, brown and black
enamels and heightened in gilt. It has two shaped panels
outlined in gilt, one enclosing an exterior scene depicting
an amorous couple in 18th century European dress seated
on a brick wall, she is holding a basket of fruit on her lap
to share with her companion, whilst nearby a young man
climbs a ladder to pick up the red fruit of a tall tree. The
other panel is overpainted with iron-red and gilt flower
sprays. There are smaller panels in between overpainted
with Chinese style landscapes, each with a pavilion and a
fishing boat. All sit above a continuous iron-red scrolling
band set between double lines. The foot ring painted with
further double iron-red lines. The interior is overpainted in
basket of iron-red flowers and green
the centre with leaves, encircled by a band of pending scrolling lappets
below the original diaper underglaze blue border at the
rim. The rim is glazed in brown. The present Chinese bowl is painted over the original
underglaze blue decoration with a popular scene known as
The Cherry Picker’ or ‘The Apple Picker’. The printed
source from which this design was taken has not been
found. Similar romantic scenes were painted by many
contemporary artists, such as the Venetian painter and
engraver Jacopo Amiconi (1675-1752). His work was
copied onto Chinese porcelain as well as used at ceramic
factories in Europe such as Count D’Aranga in Spain and
Worcester, Coalpot and Battersea in England
