Benjarong earthenware Tazza. The normal type of benjarong is most often made in China and is then made of porcelain. Kaolin clay or stone from which porcelain is made was not discovered in Thailand until the end of the 19th century. But Thailand has a long tradition of making ceramics that is separate from the Chinese tradition.

Most well known of these ceramics is the ones often referred to as Sukhothai or Sawankhalok named after some productive kiln sites in those areas where a lot of export ceramics where produced. Even if the first mentioned sites are more well known then the northern kilns of the Lanna kingdom, the northern kilns produced ceramics of a much higher quality and beauty than the southern ones did. At what kiln this tazza was made is unknown to me but it was possibly made at one of the Sukhothai kilns. It has been dated to early 19th century but it is in my opinion possibly older. They are probably made at the end of the Ayutthaya period which ended in 1767 when the Burmese sacked the city and leveled most of it with the ground.   The tazza is painted in vivid colors of blue, yellow, green and red on the naturally brown color of the clay. I think that the clay has been mixed with sand which was common practice among Thai potters.
