Condition Report: Perfect. Size 285x58mm DiameterXHeight
A Ming period Green and Red Enameld Porcelain Dish, Jiajing period or maybe slightly later. Decorated with a central scene of 2 Foo Dogs/Lions with Temple Balls. It is encircled by 3 concentric circles and red teeth like forms. The border and cavetto with nice geometric design. The base cavetto painted with dragons chasing the flaming pearl.
The dragon was often used as a symbol of imperial power in China; from at least the 14th century, five-clawed dragons were used in ceramics and the decorative arts to represent the emperor, and four-clawed dragons, such as the one chasing a pearl on the interior of this dish, appear on objects that were intended to be used as imperial gifts.
Fu (or fo) dogs are mythical lion-like animals that are protectors. Fu dog statues can be found in China flanking the entrances and gates to palaces, official buildings, temples, homes, and even tombs. These guard dogs keep watch and were historically placed to ward off any negative energies.
