PLATE WITH VAN BLEIJSWIJK ARMS 
Kangxi period (1662-1722)

The plate has been painted with large tropical leaves and fruits in place of acanthus scroll. The exotic fauna are the kind Dutch traders would have experienced in Batavia.  The reverse show two flower sprigs. There are two coats of arms accollé upside-down on two branches, The male arms on the dexter side with the three spheres or balls are probably those of Van Bleijswijk from Delft, although several other Dutch families bore this coat of arms in the 18th century. The female coat of arms with the reversed chevrons is quite unusual. Arms with three chevrons in a normal position are much more common in the Netherlands and over 16 Dutch families bore these arms in the 17th and 18th centuries, such as Van Haersolte and Van Voorst from the castern parts of the country and several families from the province of Holland, such as Boomgaart (Leiden), Carnier (Schoonhoven), Van Limburg (Amsterdam), Noem (Amsterdam), Van Nooij or Ver- noij(Dordrecht, Utrecht), Renne (Batavia) and Rolland (The Hague). Abraham van Bleijswijk of Delft married Anna van Hemert in 1708. A brewer himself, Abraham had relations in the voc, including a brother. The decoration on the front and reverse of this set indicates it must have been ordered about 1720 or shortly afterwards, probably by an as yet unknown member of the Van Bleijswijk family from Delft.
