A Chinese blue and white kraak porcelain Dish of beautiful shape and design.
Ming dynasty, Wanli period, ca 1580-1610.
The dish has characteristics of a shipwreck piece (bit of worn glaze), but we cannot attribute it to a particular one honestly.
According to Rinaldi this is a Border III dish (similar dishes also shown in the picture):
“This is a small category, but well represented in many important collections. Dishes have a rounded cavetto with a straight or flattened foliated rim. Cavetto and rim are decorated with large stylized pomegranates – usually eight – alternating with flowers or simple leaves with ruyi heads. It is possible that this style evolved from Border I dishes which are moulded with the same pomegranate pattern, the only difference being that here it is painted over.
The centre medallion is either round and encircled within a double line, or star-shaped and enclosed within thickly-drawn brackets ending with a knob. A single deer in a garden with a fence is the most common motif, although there are three pieces in the Princessehof Museum in Leeuwarden which have different motifs: one piece is beautifully decorated with two horses; another has a bird among plants and flowers and a third is decorated with the typical Kraak motif of auspicious symbols, including the double gourd, tassels and scroll (Miedema 1964, K 59; Kobe City Museum 1982, no. 86).
The underside is decorated with bows near the rim and ribbons descending towards the base, often for ming a triangular pattern, alternating with precious jewels or small Buddhist symbols. These dishes are often of good quality, especially those with the round centre medallion which may indicate a slightly earlier production than those with the bracketed centre.
