Bowl with a Hare in a Landscape
China, second quarter 17th century, Chongzhen period.
Low and thinly potted porcelain bowl, painted in underglaze blue. On the front a landscape in a double circle with a hare among flowering plants. The inner rim with a band with a meander pattern. On the outer wall three insects. Marked on the underside with the six-character mark of Emperor Xuande in a double circle.
These kind of bowls are known in the literature, but many of them or originating from the ‘Hatcher junk’ that perished around 1645. And they almost always bare a Chenghua mark. This bowl is in our opinion not from the Hatcher cargo because it does not have that typical ware.
