Superb Antique Chinese Bleu de Hué Bowl – Phoenix in Flight & Buddhist Scroll – Marked

This is a fine antique Chinese porcelain bowl, painted in underglaze cobalt blue on a white porcelain ground, commonly referred to as Bleu de Hué — a type of porcelain specially produced for the Vietnamese market.

The decoration features a majestic phoenix in flight and auspicious Buddhist scroll motifs, delicately rendered in deep blue tones. The phoenix representing rebirth and grace, and scrolls symbolizing wisdom. The bowl is finished with a silver (or white metal) rim – a traditional Vietnamese mounting practice.

The mark on the base of the bowl reads:

內府 (pronounced Nèifǔ in Mandarin)

Meaning:

• 內 (nèi) = inner, internal

• 府 (fǔ) = government office, residence, or palace bureau
