Condition Report:
Sharing with you this fantastic Chinese porcelain Kosometsuk Plate. Tianqi or Chongzhen period, Ming dynasty.
This piece belongs to the Kosometsuke (Ko-sometsuke) group, produced in Jingdezhen specifically for the Japanese tea ceremony market.
Its a mythical Shonzui piece
Shonzui (祥瑞) porcelain is a type of Chinese blue-and-white ware made at Jingdezhen mainly between about 1620 and 1650 for the Japanese market. Shonzui wares are distinguished by their dense, highly finished decoration: rich cobalt-blue painting, brocade-like geometric borders, panelled layouts, and auspicious motifs. They were especially valued in Japan as refined utensils for chanoyu tea gatherings and the kaiseki meal, where imported Chinese porcelain carried cultural prestige. Shonzui differs from ko-sometsuke, which is usually looser, sketchier, and more playful; shonzui is more formal and ornate. Because these wares were admired, later Japanese kilns produced imitations known as shonzui-de (“shonzui style”).
