The inscription identifies the scene as:
賊窟救親 — “Rescuing His Father from the Bandits’ Lair”
The story concerns Sun Liu (孫柳), a native of Hongdong in Shanxi. During unrest, Sun Liu attempted to flee with both his elderly parents. Unable to carry both when bandits approached, he first carried his mother to safety, while his father was captured. After securing his mother, Sun Liu followed the bandits and entered their stronghold alone. Despite being beaten and interrogated, he continued pleading for his father’s release. The bandit leader was eventually moved by his filial devotion and freed the father, allowing the family to return home safely.
The inscription is headed 百孝歌, “Hundred Songs of Filial Piety,” and is specifically titled 賊窟救親.
The concluding date reads:
中華民國六十一年十二月…
“December, 61st year of the Republic of China” = December 1972
It is signed:
李超武敬書
“Respectfully inscribed by Li Chaowu.”
