Rare Antique Chinese Ming Dynasty “Tradescant” Storage Jar – c. 1600-1700
Description:
An exceptional Chinese “Tradescant” stoneware storage jar, dating back to the late Ming Dynasty or ealry Qing Dynasty (circa 1600). Named after the famous 17th-century English botanist and collector John Tradescant, this iconic type of Chinese export pottery is piece of maritime trade history.
This jar features a robust, characteristic ovoid body adorned with beautifully detailed applied relief decoration of scrolling floral vines and lotus motifs.
It is covered in a beautiful, classic ochre-brown and olive-green lead glaze, showcasing the wonderful degradation, weathering, and authentic patina expected from a genuine piece of this age.
Similar examples can be found in the permanent collections of the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
