Antique Japanese Satsuma earthenware lidded jar, dating to the 19th century, with finely painted figural decoration and extensive gilding.

The rounded body is decorated with a continuous procession of figures wearing richly patterned garments, accompanied by attendants carrying tall standards and a palanquin. Pine trees and distant mountains form the landscape setting. Particular attention is given to the individual faces, clothing and delicate gold detailing.

The bodyd has a fine crackled glaze, enlivened with closely spaced gilt dots. Decorative bands of geometric patterns and stylised waves frame the shoulder, while a gilt lattice border encircles the lower body.

The cover features figural panels within an elaborate ornamental ground and is topped by a modelled, gilded animal finial.

Signed in gilt within an iron-red cartouche on the base; maker unidentified.
