Original Chikanobu (1838 – 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Tea Ceremony and Playing Go

Tea Ceremony and Playing Go – Charming triptych of beauties taking part in a tea ceremony. The hostess kneels at right, balancing a slender dipper atop a pot of water on a brazier. A tea caddy, whisk, and white cloth for wiping the tea bowl rest on the floor nearby. Her guests sit quietly before her, smiling as they wait with their hands resting in their laps. A large folding screen at right is decorated with pink and white blossoms, while two small lacquer stands hold floral arrangements. At left, two upper-class beauties play a game of go while a third watches. Each wears a sumptuously patterned kimono and obi. Detailed with burnishing on the side of the go board. An attractive illustration of this time-honored ritual and a favorite game.

Artist – Chikanobu (1838 – 1912)
