Sharing with you this large dish on footring in Imari palette. Decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red, green, black and gold with a figural scene in what seems to be a village. Flowers and dragons are also part of the painting. The base with beautiful flower sprays.
A similar dish is pictured in the literature, see pictures. According to Jorg; “This most interesting dish shows a scene taken from a book by Kitagawa Utamaro
(1753-1806), illustrating the Seiro ebonnenja gyoji (Annual Festivals in the Green Houses’) published in 1804. The print is titled Shobo bari tsuke saiko zu
(Adding the Colours to an Interior Painting in a House of Pleasure’). It is clear that the dish cannot have been made before that date, thus proving that such
exuberant, very well painted dishes were made in the 19th century. However, it is difficult to date this dish more precisely. There was a fashion in
the Tenpõ period (1830-44) of reproducing famous prints on porcelain plates (Smith 1973), although none of the known examples are as splendid as this. Personally
I would prefer a 19th-century Meiji date (and not the first half of the 19th century, as I stated in an earlier publication), when there was a successful revival of the early
18th-century Imari style. It ‘feels’ like a studio piece, is very precise, and somehow lacks the spontaneity of earlier wares. A second, almost identical example is
published by Suchomel (1997), and it is tempting to speculate that these dishes were made for one of the world exhibitions where the Japanese government displayed
the craftsmanship of various workshops.”
Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century
