OCTAGONAL BLUE-AND-WHITE DISH WANLI / TIANOI. C.1610-1625
The dish has a flat centre, a small cavetto and a broad eight-sided flange. The shallow unglazed footring has been trimmed with a knife, but it still has grit in places, on one side of the base, and also near the foot.
It is painted with a literatus and his servant in a pagode scene. Behind them there is a sketchily painted garden. The picture is framed with a double line border at the bottom of the cavetto which itself is left blank with a round the broad flange, with eight boys dancing in front of it. On the back the flange is divided into eight panels with daisy alternatively.
