Condition Report: Overall Condition A (Very Good): Rimfritting and chipping. Size 175mm diameter, 160mm highmm
China or JApan. Hard to be sure! Interesting tureen. Rather unusual palette of enamels. Based on the pottery and porcelain i am rather sure it is made in China 19th or early 20th c. The decoration has clear links to that seen on Straits wares with the peony and double phoenixes. The colour palette bears relation to what in some books on straits porcelain is described as 19th c Arita ware in Kakiemon enamel. There is a theorie in which after the Taiping Rebellion when Jingdezhen was destructed Japanese porcelain painters were employed in Jingdezhen taking with them their techniques and style. No idea if this is true.
