We were lucky enough to acquire this very nice small dish with a beautifully painted scene.
This is a story from the Romance of the Western Chamber, a famous Chinese play written by Wang Shifu (王实甫, 1260-1336) in Yuan dynasty (1271-1368):
Zhang Junrui (张君瑞, also called Scholar Zhang 张生) and Miss Cui Yingying 崔莺莺 fell in love with each other at the monastery where they first met. Yingying’s maid, Hongniang 红娘, has been helping them delivering love letters. Yingying pretended to reject Scholar Zhang in her letter, but she left a clue for a rendezvous with him at night time. This scene depicts the evening when Scholar Zhang, unable to hold back his excitement, clambers over a garden wall and jumps down to meet his young lover Yingying.
