V4 RAMSEY ?
Qianlong c.1790
The arms as painted are, Or three birds rising sable (possibly argent) a crescent for difference; with crest, A griffin’s head erased argent.
There are a very large number of shields in every tincture with three birds of indeterminate breed, and about 150 families with such a crest, and thus
it is almost impossible to be precise about an identification. Indeed, after a considerable exercise in matching such shields with this crest, there appears
to be only a single possibility. This is, Per bend or and gules three birds counterchanged; with crest, A griffin’s head erased per fess argent and sable;
both recorded for possibly related branches of the Ramsey family. The painting appears accurate and after a well drawn original (which may not, however, have recorded the field and crest both ‘party’) while the crescent clearly indicates the line of a second son. In spite of this, the Ramsey identification can be no more than tentative.
