A very rare saucer showing one of the Four Elements (fire) of Francesco Albani. It is therefore part of a set of 4 of these dishes.

MYTHOLOGY
The four elements
These decorations were modeled on the Four Elements series that Francesco Albani painted in 1635 for the Cardinal of Savoy, who would become King of Sardinia. The paintings are currently in the Galleria Sabauda, in Turin. These paintings were very successful and long inspired engravers, including Larmessin, Delignon, Hérisset and Duthenoffer.
Reading the correspondence addressed to the cardinal by the painter sheds light on the aspirations of the latter who meticulously describes the symbols he represented (Galerie des arts et de l’histoire, volume eighth, Paris, 1836). Albani gives in particular the reason why he made his paintings in a round shape: the elements, in fact, being placed one above the other in concentric order throughout the universe, this shape was that which seemed to him to best suit the subject. In the first where I painted Fire, Your Highness will see, not only the celestial and truly elementary fire represented by the powerful Jupiter, but also the material fire and that of love, including Vulcan and the goddess of Cyprus are the emblems I did not want to place in the forges of Vulcan neither Brontès, nor the other Cyclops: I preferred to paint three young Cupids there, given that the flesh of these children forms a more spicy opposition with the brown tones of those of Vulcan. I also had to comply, in this choice, with the desire of Your Serene Highness […] that I represent a large number of Loves piercing with their irresistible shafts the hardest marble, steel, diamond and the very heart of the gods…
