Ladies with Small Dogs in Chinese Porcelain: Symbolism & Meaning

1. Courtly Life & Domestic Harmony

This motif was especially popular during the Kangxi (1662–1722) and Qianlong (1736–1795) periods. Scenes of elegant women at leisure, often with pets like small dogs or birds, evoke the idealized world of domestic tranquility, refinement, and the pleasures of the literati lifestyle.

2. Symbol of Loyalty

In Chinese symbolism, dogs are associated with loyalty, devotion, and protection. When depicted with women, the dog may represent:

• Faithful companionship

• The ideal of a loyal wife or concubine

• Domestic peace and feminine virtue

3. Aesthetic & Decorative Function

Scenes like this were also chosen simply for their beauty and elegance. They reflect a nostalgic vision of an idealized inner court or garden, and were popular with both Chinese elite and export markets.

It bears a central 4 character Chenghua mark to the base.

Provenance: From the inventory of an old Antique Shop from Amsterdam that stopped operating in the 1980’s. Thence by decent in the family.
