Antique Ming Wanli Chinese Swatow Zhangzhou Porcelain Jar Dragons Foo Lions
In stock
Condition Report: Crackle lines all over and some firing flaws, no real damages found. Lid with some ware. Size: 23CM high
A striking antique Chinese blue and white porcelain jar, dating to the Ming dynasty, Wanli period, circa 1573–1590.
The jar is freely and vigorously painted in underglaze blue. The main decoration depicts two sinuous four-clawed dragons moving among scrolling clouds, flames and other auspicious motifs. Around the shoulder, near the rim, is a decorative band featuring Buddhist guardian lions, commonly known as Foo or Fu lions.
The spontaneous brushwork, greyish-blue cobalt tones and boldly composed decoration are characteristic of Swatow, also known as Zhangzhou, export porcelain produced in southern China during the late Ming dynasty.
The jar has a compact baluster-shaped body with rounded shoulders, a short neck and an unglazed foot rim. It is accompanied by an attractive pierced wooden cover decorated with a stylised longevity symbol. The wooden cover is of later date.
