A very attractive Chinese blue and white porcelain dish, dating to the Kangxi period (1662–1722).
The dish is finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a lively scene of waterbirds in a flowering waterside garden. Several birds are shown standing amongst rocks and vegetation, while others are depicted in flight above. Small insects or butterflies appear between the birds, adding further movement to the composition.
The scene is surrounded by an unusually elaborate border consisting of a dense interlocking cash-coin pattern, reserved with six circular floral cartouches. The combination of the detailed central bird scene and highly decorative border gives the dish a particularly strong Kangxi appearance.
