18C Chinese Porcelain UTICA inscribed Plate Chine de Commande Qianlong
In stock
Condition Report:
The plate with the allegorical figures of Concorde and Liberty and the inscription UTICA is believed to be from after the French Revolution of 1789. The two embracing figures of Concord and Liberty represent the ideals of the French Revolution, which emphasized the concepts of freedom, equality, and fraternity. The dating of the plate in the book “Hervouët and Bruneau’s La Porcelaine de la Compagnie des Indes à Decor Occidental, 1986, p. 322, fig. 13 110” (around 1770) is most likely erroneous. The plate should be dated after 1790. The symbolism of the plate is similar to that of Republican prints from 1792-93, which depict similar symbols.
