Sharing with you this unusually small Border IX dish with four very large panels, two of them with Dutch flowers and two with figures in a landscape. The central medaillon has two seated figures in a landscape. The underside, as also shown in the example in Rinaldi in the pictures, has the unusual motif of bifurcated branches placed under de rim.

Ca 1635-1650

Border IX
The peculiarity of this border is that it blends typical Kraak panelled borders with Transitional style motifs, such as descriptive scenes with people in a landscape and a number of flowers peculiar to these wares. These are usually referred to as tulips, yet many varieties of flowers are depicted: carnations, a small double-petalled round flower and broad, very stylized flowers with stiff leaves in pairs, almost an armorial flower, which does not represent a tulip at all. Dr. Jorg suggest that perhaps these are ‘Dutch flowers’, a description of which he found on a V.O.C. document dated 1639 sent from Batavia to Fort Zeeland in Formosa requesting the Dutch merchants there to buy wares painted with ‘Dutch flowers’.

The underside of dishes with Border IX is decorated with floral sprays within straight lines which form narrow panels from rim to footrim. The panels divide the underside into large sections each with a diamond or four-petalled cartouche containing floral motifs. Another style of underside decoration is, curiously enough, the long-forgotten bird-on-bifurcated-branches that had been so popular at the end of the sixteenth century on Border IV and some Border VI dishes. However, on Border IX dishes the branches are placed with the base near the rim, as can be seen on this particular dish.

Condition; 1 firing flaw to rim with a linear section where the glaze seems a bit heaped. Chip to rim and some minimal rimfrits. Size; 20.5×3.5 CM or 8.1×1.4 INCH
