Teacup and Saucer Porcelain decorated in famille rose, iron red and black and gold overglaze enamels
Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng period (1723-1735)
Bowl type teacup with inset foot, and round saucer, both with the rim scalloped in six curlicues. The centre of the saucer and the bottom of the cup are decorated with a “hand of Buddha” lemon in gold lined in iron red, inside two concentric lines in blue. The decoration of the saucer and the outer surface of the teacup is similar: the well of the saucer is decorated with six enamelled medallions, outlined in gold and red, with the ground coloured alternately in green and pale blue patterned in Y designs, with a stylised peony in the centre of each. These medallions border another six, which are pentagonal and radiate from the central circle, and from the foot on the cup. These pentagons are decorated alternately with large peonies and sprays of foliage with small flowers in rose.
