Large Ming Dynasty Zhangzhou (Swatow) Ware Charger
A Ming porcelain dish made for the Islamic market, dating from the Wanli to Chongzhen period, circa 1620–1640. This heavily potted Swatow ware dish was produced in Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province.
The central medallion is freely painted with an aquatic scene featuring a marine animals, aquatic plants, boat and stylised landscape elements. The broad outer border is divided into panels containing dancing male figures, alternating with Islamic inscriptions that translate as “God Who Gives Health” and “God the Healer.”
A rare and interesting example of late Ming Zhangzhou export porcelain, probably produced for Islamic communities in Southeast Asia.
