Carp
The carp is generally seen as an emblem of longevity, since it can become quite old, of wealth, abundance and perseverance, since it struggles against the river currents. The carp symbolizes a wish for benefit or advantage in business.
Carp jumping over the Dragon’s Gate (Long men)
The image of a carp jumping over Dragon’s Gate is an old and enduring Chinese cultural symbol for courage, perseverance, and accomplishment. Historically, the dragon was the exclusive symbol of the emperor of China. According to Chinese mythology, the Dragon’s Gate is located at the top of a waterfall cascading from a legendary mountain. Many carp swim upstream against the river’s strong current, but few are capable or brave enough for the final leap over the waterfall. If a carp successfully makes the jump, it is transformed into a powerful dragon. A Chinese dragon’s large, conspicuous scales indicate its origin from a carp. The Chinese dragon has long been an auspicious symbol of great and benevolent, magical power.
Bleu de Hue
Chinese blue and white export porcelain for the Vietnamese market. The best “Bleu de Hue” was ordered by the Vietnamese court by way of diplomatic missions to China. Most of them were produced in Jingdezhen with special designs and marks. Hue is the name of the old city where the Vietnamese King resided at the time. The designs are special, characteristic and have a slight character of being Japanese instead. Some have poem on them. One common two character mark reads Nei Fu, and can be translated as “Inner Court”. Blue de Hue wares were made in China for the Vietnamese dynasties in the 18th and 19th century until after the revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
