Sharing with yout this very fine and exceptionally well-painted Chinese blue and white porcelain Kraak dish, dating to the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty, circa 1600.
The central medallion is beautifully decorated with a deer in a landscape beneath an old pine tree. The scene also includes rocks, vegetation and a moon or sun.
The moulded border is divided into alternating panels painted with birds among flowering plants and large floral sprays. These are separated by narrow bands containing diaper patterns and small auspicious motifs. Around the central scene is a continuous scroll border. The reverse is decorated in the typical Kraak manner with outlined panels containing freely painted floral and sacred mushrooms.
The deer is an auspicious subject in Chinese art, associated with longevity and prosperity. The Chinese word for deer, lu, also sounds like the word for the salary or emolument of a government official. Combined with the evergreen pine, the decoration expresses wishes for a long and successful life.
