Peony
Peony – Mu-Dan – Queen of Flowers, the peony is a emblem of wealth and distinction.
Rock
Emblem of longevity, hardness and durability.
Chrysanthemum
One of the “Four flowers of the Season” as a symbol of the autumn, the ninth month and symbol of joviality, first mentioned in the Book of Rites written in the Zhou dynasty. The flower has come to symbolize easy life after retirement as reflected by the Song dynasty Scholar Zhou Dunyi (1017-1073) who regarded it as “the flower of scholarship and loneliness”. Chrysanthemum is also a well-known herb used to prolong life. The petals and leaves are used to make wine and medicine. The early morning dew, collected from the flowers, was thought to help with longevity.
Mandarin ducks
Bird native to East Asia, lives in pairs and mate for life. Symbol for martial happiness. The depiction of ducks in a lotus pond as a decorative motif on ceramics has its origins in the Tang dynasty and gained particular popularity in the Yuan dynasty on blue and white dishes and vases.

Pine
Pine – Song – symbol of endurance and longevity. The favorite tree of Chinese painters. Pine trees rank above all other trees and epitomizes self-discipline and steadfastness. In Daoism its twisted stem and bransches are admired as their patterns reminds of the twistings of the life forces. The plum tree, pine, and bamboo are the “Three Friends in Winter”.
