An interesting antique Chinese porcelain box and cover, attributed to the Zhangzhou (Swatow) kilns, late Ming dynasty, circa 1600.
Of circular form with a gently domed cover and shallow rounded body, covered in a pale bluish-white glaze. The cover displays fine glaze crackling, scattered iron-red and orange-coloured traces, and areas of surface wear.
This type of covered box is known from late Ming Zhangzhou production, including examples decorated in iron-red and green overglaze enamels. The scattered coloured traces on the present cover raise the possibility that it was originally decorated in a similar manner, with much of the decoration subsequently lost through wear or exposure. Similar pieces with enamel also in the gallery.
The cover and base show differences in glaze appearance, with a more crackled surface on the cover and a smoother, whiter glaze on the lower section. But we do think they belong together.
Period: Late Ming dynasty, circa 1570–1640.
