Condition Report: Lid with 2 small chips and restored section to the rim. Jar with chip to inner rim. Size: 12.2x6.2CM DiameterxHeight

A finely decorated Japanese Satsuma earthenware lidded box, dating to the late 19th century, Meiji period.
The shallow circular body stands on three short feet.

The cover combines a panel of women and children in richly patterned clothing with an elaborate garden landscape featuring long-tailed birds, flowering plants, rocks and flowing water.
The sides are decorated with bands of colourful floral and geometric patterns, including a prominent black-and-gold fretwork border. The three feet are picked out in gilt.
Both the interior of the box and the underside of the cover are painted with a woman in a garden setting.
A small dark square cartouche with traces of gilding is present on the base; the inscription is not legible.
