Sharing with you this fantastic Chinese porcelain bowl
Decorated with the classic scene of the Former Ode on the Red Cliff. Personally, it is one of the finest examples I have ever handled.
Bowls with Red Cliff scenes became especially popular during the final decade(s) of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of the Qing dynasty. There is a reason for this, although it is not always well explained. The Former Ode on the Red Cliff was written by the great Song dynasty scholar Su Shi after his political exile. It reflects on the rise and fall of empires, the passing of time, and the transience of power.
During the Ming–Qing transition, these themes resonated deeply with scholars and literati living through the collapse of one dynasty and the establishment of another. As a result, Red Cliff imagery became particularly meaningful to many Ming loyalists and members of the literati. This bowl is a beautiful example of that tradition.
